IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (4/8/24)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

I am a firm believer that good athletes, regardless of their sport, had excellent instruction early in their chosen sport, and took to heart what they were being taught.

You might call this process "coachability."  In other words, the youngster was willing to follow the instruction and learn the skills being taught.

Young athletes should embrace the coaching and never have the attitude that they already know everything.  By the time you reach high school, student-athletes further develop their skills, and on court/field presence and strategy.  There is always more to learn and improve on if you want to further your abilities.

There may be times when you might disagree with the process or how a coach delivers a message.  But please--listen to the instruction!  Pay attention when coaches speak with your teammates. No coach wants to repeat a message.  If you keep a mentality of wanting to learn, you will improve in all aspects of your sport.  You may be surprised how "coachability" will help you conquer obstacles you never thought were possible!
